The Chief Cause Of Failure And Unhappiness

“The chief cause of failure and unhappiness is trading what you want most for what you want now” – Zig Ziglar

Are you able to define your most important goals? Do you know where to start?

I had been struggling for some time with the question of what to do first in order to make important changes in my life, specifically in my habits:

  • “Should I get more sleep?”
  • “Should I eat better?”
  • “Why can’t I make myself write a business plan?”
  • “How much time should I spend with my family vs my business?”

And many other questions.

Then, a story in the book “The Compound Effect” gave me the obvious answer. Exercise was the first priority. The very first. No need to start with a demanding exercise program. Especially since it’s always recommended to visit the doctor first, if you are out of shape. So, I decided to start simply with walking. I felt comfortable with the decision.

It was a heartfelt decision. I knew it, because little things started to change all by themselves. Things like brushing my teeth every night before going to bed. This is probably trivial to most everyone, but it’s always been a struggle for me. Another little thing that changed was a eating habit. I always took a sip of milk every time I took a bite of cookie. Now, I eat my cookies, then drink the glass at the end. This is reducing my consumption of milk. I’m sure that, to anyone who hasn’t read The Compound Effect, this will be laughable. Not to me. I never believed in diets. The time it takes to lose those extra pounds is not important. If it takes one or two years, it will be ok.

Little by little, I am building habits that will last. Of course, my brain is full of tricks to make me go back to my old habits. When I fail at one, I remember the exercise habit is the first priority for now. I know it will logically help build other habits, as I ask more of myself in the exercise department.

For instance, today, as I was in stores looking for stationary bikes, I saw something called the Perfect Mini Stepper. I bought it immediately. It doesn’t cost very much, it seems sturdy, it doesn’t take much space, and it’s definitely more demanding than walking, as I experienced first hand a few minutes after getting back home to try it.

This morning, I had seen the picture you see below, in my Facebook wall. I liked it so much, I saved it on my computer, then uploaded it at APSense, to find it easily. It inspired me to write this post, and so it will be one more place for me to find it easily. It goes hand in hand with those new habits I’m building.
