I Was A Douchebag

Yes. I was a douchebag. For real.

For only 5 minutes, though. Does that count? Read on.

A few days ago, it rained considerably. Remember, I live in Quebec city, and this is January. The night following that rainy day, the weather quickly turned back to normal winter degrees, i.e. around minus 15 degrees Celsius, or even colder. Roads and sidewalks became perfect places for ice hockey. Since it was too cold to apply salt until tonight, most people stay indoors at night.

I had decided to take a walk to follow on my resolve of developing the new exercise habit I’m building according to the Compound Effect book ( see this post ). I had given myself 2 objectives for this walk. First, the grocery store to buy one quart of 1% milk (that’s another Compound Effect thing, drinking 1% instead of 2% milk, small progress is still progress). My 2nd objective was to buy some salt to apply on my driveway and entrance.

When I reached the hardware store, I saw the salt bags were 22 pounds each. No way was I going to go back home walking with this load by walking on this slidy sidewalks. So, getting back home, I took the car. I then decided on another objective, to bring back the books I had borrowed at a local library, knowing I was a few days late and would have to pay a small fee.

When I arrived in the library parking, it was full of ice, so I didn’t quite make it in a proper parking space. I found myself in the middle of 2 spaces. I told myself: “Hey, I hate when douchebags do this on a day like December 23rd in a full parking mall.” Yes, but this ain’t December 23rd. As I said earlier, people stay inside when it’s risky to fall and break a few bones just walking a few meters. I noticed even the library parking was mostly empty. So, I decided then and there I would stay parked like a douchebag. I knew I would stay inside the library only a few minutes anyway, and I believed no one would be much bothered by my rebel parking attitude.

When I came back to the car, someone had just parked right beside me. I didn’t look at the person. In the past, I would have felt guilty of what I did. I assumed by douchebag act with a smile and went away. The person would have been quite silly to glare at me anyway, since there were many other parking spaces left.

I really do hate douchebags, because most of the time, they act like they’re all alone in the world, or as if the world belongs to them. I need to work on tolerance.

As I finished writing this post, I searched for a picture for it. The word “douchebag” didn’t bring anything. The word “scum” brought the picture you see at the top. If you find out why this is scum, let me know. :)
